Read MorePeter Collins with Stirling Moss. Collins partnered Moss in the tail-end HWM team for the 1952 season. Collins won 3 Grands Prix in his short career before he was killed at the Nürburgring in Germany. Moss began his career in 1947 driving a BMW 328. In 1955 he won his first Grand Prix at Aintree driving a Mercedes, and in 1956 went on to win the Monaco and Italian Grands Prix driving for the Maserati team. In 1957 he was team leader in a British Vanwall, and beat the Maserati and Ferrari teams at Monza in the Italian Grand Prix. He drove Coopers and Lotuses through to 1961, and retired after an accident at Goodwood in 1962.

Note the grandstands are still very crudely built, it was towards the end of 1953 that they became more permanent looking and had advertising on them.

Nearest the camera is Reg Parnell, still watching the starter drop the flag while Froilan Gonz?lez on the other side has also got a good start. Between them is Nino Farina in the Thinwall Special, a Ferrari 375/F1, modified by Vandervell. Gonzalez went on to earn one of British Racing Motor's very few victories.
